Can you replace technographics with an LLM prompt?

AI has made technology research dramatically faster. For revenue teams, the question is whether AI can replace the technographics data used to prioritize accounts and target pipeline.

Today, you can ask a large language model what software a company might use and get a plausible answer in seconds. The model can inspect websites, interpret job postings, read hiring signals, and summarize technical evidence.

So a reasonable question emerges.

If AI can infer technology usage, do revenue teams still need technographics data to target and prioritize accounts?

We tested this directly.

The answer is clear. LLMs can assist with technographic research. They do not replace a production technographics dataset.

The difference appears the moment you try to scale this across the accounts revenue teams actually need to target.

We tested two ways to generate technographics with LLMs

To evaluate whether AI could replace technographics data, we ran two different experiments.

Both used LLMs, but in very different ways.

Approach 1. Domain evidence detection

The first approach started from a set of enterprise technologies and attempted to detect their usage across company domains using publicly observable signals.

The workflow:

  • identified candidate domains showing evidence of technology usage through open-source web sources
  • collected signals such as front end code evidence, DNS records, job postings, employee skills, and firmographic context
  • ran multiple evidence checks per domain and technology
  • used an LLM to interpret the signals and assign a confidence score for technology presence

At a small scale, this approach could surface credible signals for some domains.

In one experiment, analyzing a small batch of domains required hundreds of LLM calls and over one hundred thousand tokens, highlighting how quickly compute and orchestration grow as the workflow scales.

However, coverage was limited, runtime increased quickly as the workflow scaled, and the system relied entirely on publicly visible signals.

Approach 2. Customer list generation and verification

The second approach focused on a single technology in the CRM category.

Instead of detecting technology from domains, the workflow attempted to generate and verify a list of companies using that technology.

The workflow:

  • generated candidate companies believed to use the technology
  • validated technology usage using public evidence
  • used the LLM to reason over evidence and confirm likely usage

This approach was able to generate about 2,000 verified companies, with an estimated ceiling of roughly 5,000 companies before verification quality began to degrade.

Scaling toward full market coverage required integrating additional company data export workflows, which significantly increased cost.

Both experiments demonstrated the same pattern. LLMs can assist with technographic research. They do not replace a production technographics dataset.

Problem 1. Coverage does not scale

LLMs are strong at analyzing evidence. They are not designed to generate comprehensive market coverage.

The workflows began to degrade after a few thousand companies or a limited set of domain level detections. Verification of genuine product usage became increasingly difficult, and the risk of incorrect signals increased.

This matters because real software ecosystems are large.

For example, the customer base of a major enterprise CRM platform exceeds 150,000 companies globally. Demandbase technographics coverage for that technology area alone exceeds 100,000 accounts.

A workflow that reliably produces only a few thousand verified companies does not help GTM teams prioritize the full market.

Coverage is the difference between research and revenue execution.

Problem 2. Costs rise quickly at production scale

Early LLM experiments often look inexpensive.

Small tests can run for only a few dollars because the model is analyzing a limited number of companies or domains.

However, once the workflow attempts to operate at production scale, the economics change.

Scaling the CRM experiment toward 100,000 companies required combining the LLM with a data platform capable of exporting large company lists and supporting batch verification workflows.

The estimated cost of this pipeline reached roughly $19,549 for a single technology.

Importantly, nearly all of that cost came from the data acquisition layer rather than the AI model itself.

Prompting an LLM is inexpensive. Building a repeatable system that can source, validate, deduplicate, and export company technology data at market scale is not.

Demandbase technographics delivers comparable production value at roughly one tenth of that cost, helping GTM teams target the right accounts without building or operating their own data pipeline.

Problem 3. Accuracy weakens beyond obvious signals

Small experiments tend to focus on easy detections.

Some technologies are visible in public signals such as:

  • JavaScript or front end scripts
  • documentation references
  • hiring requirements
  • employee skill mentions

But many technologies are not visible on the public web.

They may exist:

  • behind the firewall
  • in infrastructure layers
  • within internal systems that do not appear in public artifacts

When the evidence becomes sparse, LLM reasoning alone becomes unreliable. The model may still produce an answer, but the underlying signal quality declines.

This is where purpose built technographic systems outperform prompt based workflows.

Why technographics requires a data system

Technographics is not simply asking an AI what a company uses. It is a signal system revenue teams rely on to prioritize accounts and identify opportunities.

It is a large scale signal collection and inference system.

Demandbase technographics continuously analyzes signals across more than 100 million domains and combines multiple detection methods including:

  • front end code analysis
  • DNS signal extraction
  • job demand signals
  • employee experience data
  • proprietary technology detection signatures
  • machine learning models trained on billions of signals

The underlying signal pipeline operates at a significant scale. It processes hundreds of millions of job postings and more than 200 million professional experience records, while continuously crawling over 100 million domains to detect technology signals and infrastructure patterns.

Because technology stacks change frequently, technographics data also needs to account for technology drift. Companies adopt new tools, migrate infrastructure, and retire platforms regularly. To address this, Demandbase performs a full dataset refresh every month, ensuring the entire technographics graph is recalculated from the latest signals. Work is underway to move toward incremental daily refresh cycles, further reducing drift and improving freshness.

This scale of signal collection and refresh enables reliable coverage and consistent technology detection across millions of B2B companies globally.

In practice, the difference between LLM workflows and production technographics becomes clear when you compare scale, cost, and accuracy. In our experiments, LLM-based workflows were useful for small-scale research but struggled to deliver reliable coverage beyond a few thousand companies. Demandbase technographics, by contrast, delivers roughly 20x greater coverage, about 2x higher detection accuracy, and about 10x lower cost while requiring no custom data pipelines or workflow orchestration.

The real takeaway

AI has dramatically improved technographic research.

It allows analysts to inspect evidence faster and validate individual accounts more efficiently.

But it does not eliminate the need for technographics data.

If you want to validate a handful of companies, an LLM can help.

If you want market wide coverage to prioritize the right accounts with reliable detection and minimal operational overhead, purpose built technographics still wins.

The future is not LLM versus technographics.
