Although we still have some ground to cover, that gap is closing as we hear more about the rise of the “marketing technologist.” Last year, Gartner predicted that the CMOs would spend more money on technology than CIOs and we’re seeing trends that will make that prediction a reality.
In particular, B2B marketers are developing news tools and skills that enable them to track online buyer activity, proactively engage prospects and measure their efforts across all channels. But that’s only the beginning. Marketers will collaborate with IT on the selection and implementation of new technologies, integrating systems, executing and reporting on campaigns, and database management.
Some organizations will add a specific position – the marketing technologist. All organizations will need their marketers to be more tech savvy in the areas of SaaS applications, data management, web mechanics and ad tech.
All these transformations will continue steadily over the next couple of year, but the rise of the marketing technologist has real implications for the immediate future.
